So wrote Robert Gibbings in his book
"Comng Down the Wye" when he stayed in the village
while writing the book in 1942.
Llangurig is the first village on the River Wye,
some ten miles from its source at Plynlimon, and 1000 feet above
sea level.
It is the highest village in Wales!
Situated as it is, in the exact centre of Wales, it is the ideal
base
for exploring Wales itself, and for walking, bird watching, and
fishing locally.
As the first village on the River Wye we are a perfect base for
doing part or all of the

LLANGURIG PARISH
CHURCH.
Founded before 550 AD.
The main body of the church is the result of restoration work by
Sir George Gilbert Scott and Arthur Baker on behalf of J.Y.C.
Lloyd of Clochfaen Hall in Early English Style in 1877-78. Some
of the 15thC nave wall survives internally and the south-east
corner of the church may also be original medieval masonry.
Medieval window tracery is retained in the north and south walls.
The tower has been attributed to the middle of the 14thC, though
it has been suggested by Haslam that its core might be as early
as the 12thC on the basis of the slight misalignment with the
nave. The spire and castellation are 19thC additions.
Fine woodwork & stained glass windows.
FOUNTAIN
designed by W.A.S.Benson a leading Arts & Crafts
architect.
Erected in 1898 by Mrs H.J.M. Lloyd-Verney (1844-1913), niece and
heiress of J.Y.W. Lloyd, as a memorial to her husband, Colonel
G.H. Lloyd-Verney (1842-1896), and to commemorate the completion
of the village's piped water supply, a scheme begun by
Colonel Lloyd-Verney.
There are Bronze plaques on either side of fountain inscribed
with the monogram G & MLV and their coat of arms.
